What we want

We – the team of the Jean Monnet Chair of European History, held by Jürgen Elvert, Professor of History of the 19th and 20th century, in consideration of European Integration – are unifying several aspects: the European History as itself, an innovative methodology and high-level experience and expertise. European History in this sense means to think Europe firster as a mosaic of different parts, second Europe by historical developments, especially by the sea, and third Europe and its History in a global approach. The Chair asks what Europe is connoted with in a globalized world and research. Terms like Westernization, Orientalism, and Europeanism/Europeanization are central issues, the Chair deals with.

Therefore, main purposes are to research/explore, discuss, and finally present new inputs, which could push the discourse – the academic one as well as the public one. In this sense, the public coordinate of the Chair’s work is enormous. Public History, as an example, is tangent to every-day-historical-learning: museums, commemoration, and remembrance are key factors of political education.

How research is done (innovative methodology)

The Jean Monnet Project is the core-project, around there are three innovative parts: the exhibition (Europe and the Sea), the book (A maritime history of European civilization), and the several basic research projects (according to European Maritime Culture).

Therefore, our core issues are:

  • European History
  • European Maritime History
  • European Maritime Heritage
  • European Civilization
